HELLO

We try to stay positive

WELCOME TO BLUNT AND THE BEAUTIFUL

Posted by admin On April - 22 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

Welcome to the Blunt and the Beautiful, the new revamped website of the former “Obsolete When All Are Employed.”  Why the change?  I’ve realized that employment in itself doesn’t define the parameters of a person’s happiness so I’ve broadened the scope of our discussion to extend beyond job security.

Apologies for taking the break in revamping – I’m not a coder or programmer so many of the website changes were experimental and trial and error.  Please take note of the email subscribe feature and RSS feed on the right.  Finally, you can get daily updates on new articles.  Also, another new feature is that you can subscribe to follow-ups in posts; therefore, if you write a comment, any responses thereafter will come right to you – just check off the subscribe box.

Also, the premise of this website is to keep discourse open.  We will not beat around the bush to speak our mind.  But in striving to stay positive, we hope that any insights from  your end will be honest but not hateful.

Thanks and great reading!

Does Watching the News Make People More Negative?

Posted by admin On September - 3 - 2011ADD COMMENTS

“Ignorance is Bliss”

We’ve all heard this saying that sometimes knowing less may be more beneficial to your outlook on life and perspective.  I met this 20 year old guy the other day who told me that he doesn’t watch the news because it makes him more depressed.  He said that if you hear about people killing each other all day or all the natural disasters in the world, it is bound to fill you up with negativity.

Then, again, an inspiring motivation speaker once said that if  you want to be an agent of change in the world, just pick up a newspaper and let that be your recipe.  Let the disasters that are happening in the world move you to help make a difference.

What do you think?!  Does News depress you?!

So, Casey Anthony is acquitted and the public is starting to question  the legal system.  What blew my mind was why she didn’t go up to defend herself?

Casey was given the option to defend herself and she did not.  Automatically, in my opinion, that just means that you’re guilty.  Why would it be such a problem to tell your own story?

It brought to mind an interesting point: how do people look at facts? And how do facts play into PERCEPTION? And how can the wrong perception be a DEAL BREAKER in life if you come off wrong?

I have gotten into so much trouble myself by over explaining and under explaining awkward/bad situations that have happened to me in the past at work, in life, etc. and let me tell you sometimes it’s better not to say anything.  Sometimes speaking up is great because you can lay out the nitty gritty of what really happened.  From my own experiences, justice and fairness do not play our evenly in the REAL WORLD.

CONS of defending yourself:

  • Your statement may give too much information that can incriminate you unwittingly.
  • Your story may be inconsistent at the time of incident and statement after
  • You might seem cocky, defensive, etc.

PROS of defending yourself:

  • You tell the circumstances that led to incident
  • You can control your image to a point if you are good and consistent at speaking

QUESTION OF THE DAY:

When is it right, a good time, smart or beneficial to defend yourself if you end up in a questionable situation?

You can apply this to work, hierarchical situations, politics, etc.

Thanks,

Blunt and the Beautiful

“The thought police would get him just the same. He had committed–would have committed, even if he had never set pen to paper–the essential crime that contained all others in itself. Thoughtcrime, they called it. Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you.” – 1984

The demands of corporate often do not blend with the nature of the human condition.  Emotions or being emotional are not looked upon highly in many professional fields.  Whether it is a sign of weakness, feelings and any mark of what it means to be human are better hidden than revealed, especially if they do not conform to the ideals of what a higher authority demands from you.  I’ve been thinking a lot about  Thoughtcrime in George Orwell’s 1984 and its relevancy today.  For those unfamiliar with the book, thoughtcrime is a term in the novel referring to thinking nonconformist ideas that are against Big Brother (the government) and the Party.  Inhabitants of that society are trained to think and speak only within the perameters that benefit and adhere to the Party’s ideals.  Anthing outside of the Party’s teachings are illegal.

Today, the constraints on the independence and freedom of an individual are not as obvious.  We are taught what is “right,”normal,” “real.”  And what is socially acceptable within these parameters are to conform with the norm.  And in order to get ahead, sometimes, an individual has to compromise his or her truth to survive and climb up the ladder - His or her “truth” meaning, beliefs, understanding of a situation, faith, and opinions.

Do you think that this is just the nature of reality?  Do we need to compromise our own truths to get ahead?  Or to even fit in?

A Job is not an end all be all

Posted by admin On June - 30 - 20101 COMMENT

I'm Free BABY!

Jobs are important.  BUT a job is not an end all be all.  Jobs give us:

1) money

2) sometimes meaning in life

3) validity in our skills

4) a chance to be noticed and seen

5) a chance to grow

These are some of the great things that jobs can do you for you.  But what can you do for yourself without a job.  I know, it can be depressing being unemployed, but there are a number of things that you can do to achieve all of the above.  Empower yourself.

1) Find alternative and temporary positions that can give you money.  Craigs List, temp agencies, and Linked in are great ways to get connected and see what is out there.  Be careful not to post your resume on-line though.  If you do, temp agencies do not resend your resume to those companies, which maked it harder for them to advocate for you — apparently there is a policy that they cannot send resumes you have already sent yourself.  It is buried in a file already.

2) Get Creative.  An interesting website to check out where you can offer a service for $5.  Like to sing, write, do something interesting?  Make money at Fiverr where people pay to be entertained. http://www.fiverr.com/

3)  Exercise.  I know what you’re thinking: I’m tired of running around all day looking for a job.  I don’t need to run, bike, jog, tumble in the grass.  But seriously, if you get those blood vessels dilated, you’ll probably be less stressed.  And happier.  And you’ll be seen.  And you might run into a friend or make a friend.  But nothing new will come to you unless you go out there and seeik it.

4) Volunteer.  Yes, doing free work might bite.  But you might make contacts and learn new skills.  It’s no harm in asking questions and finding a small organization that suits your needs and its own.

Yes, being unemployed isn’t fun.  But there are creative ways to make it work.  Unconventionally.

If you have any suggestions or advice to share, do tell! We love you!

HIRE ACT

Posted by admin On June - 20 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Good new for all who are fervently looking for a job!  The Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act, gives tax benefits to employers who hire the unemployed.

Hopefully this will spur the economy and jobless rate along.  Also, you can track the stimulus benefits by going to http://www.recovery.gov/Pages/home.aspx

Asian, latino, Negro?

Posted by Tiffany A. On May - 6 - 20101 COMMENT

Apparently using Negro is still OK in the 21st century.

The Census is using Negro as a category.  Imagine going door to door and asking a black family, “Do you  consider yourself asian, latino, white or negro?”  Would a door slam suffice as a proper response to an outdated and offensive term? Perhaps a replacement of black or African American on the Census would be more productive.

Despite living in modern and progressive times with our first black president, I guess progress needs to include a team effort.  Any sociologists or culturally and race-sensitive folks in the house?

I suppose even if these people aren’t around, there’s always common sense.  According to a friend of mine who works in the census, “ I’m not going to use negro.  I’m going to ask if you are black or African American and I’m sure other people will know better to do the same.”

Not too sure about that, especially since it appears are still confused about the differences between race, ethnicity and nationality.  When people are still asking, “Why is latino considered an ethnicity?” a crinkled forehead might just be the only appropriate response one can muster without feeling a pitiful dread of America’s doom.

If this kind of  ignorance continues to circulate, we shouldn’t be surprised when laws are made targeting certain groups.
